New England foliage does not peak on one perfect weekend. A moving route through Vermont, the White Mountains and coastal Maine gives you a better chance of following the color while avoiding the busiest bottlenecks.
Stage 1 — Stowe, Vermont
Start in Stowe for Green Mountain scenery, village atmosphere and access to Smugglers’ Notch. Use it as the northern anchor while following live foliage reports.
Stage 2 — White Mountains
Drive the Kancamagus Highway for mountain overlooks and concentrated color. North Conway is a useful base for food, lodging and scenic-rail options.
Stage 3 — Bar Harbor and Acadia
Finish on the Maine coast, combining foliage with granite peaks and Atlantic scenery. Cadillac Mountain, Park Loop Road and the carriage roads make this stage feel different from inland New England.
