Big Sky’s appeal is broader than skiing. Summer and fall turn Lone Mountain and the surrounding Gallatin landscape into an outdoor playground, while winter shifts the focus back to snow sports.

Summer

Warm-weather Big Sky is built for outdoor days: hiking, mountain biking, rafting and fly-fishing. It is the broadest season for a packed activity itinerary.

Fall shoulder season

September through November brings quieter trails, golden aspen and cottonwood color and wildlife viewing. The trade-off is reduced hours at some businesses.

Winter

Winter pivots to skiing and snowboarding at Big Sky Resort. Lone Mountain becomes the main event.

Use Big Sky as a base

The destination works especially well when combined with Yellowstone and Southwest Montana. Keep road conditions and seasonal operating hours in the plan.
