New York City is surrounded by weekend destinations that feel farther away than they are. The Hudson Valley and Catskills offer walkable towns, hiking, art and foliage within roughly one to three hours.
Beacon
Beacon combines a walkable Main Street with Dia Beacon and Hudson Highlands hiking. It is one of the easiest car-free choices from NYC.
Cold Spring
Cold Spring is a compact river town with antiques, restaurants and direct access to nearby hiking. It works well as a one-night or two-day escape.
New Paltz and Mohonk
New Paltz is the gateway to Mohonk Preserve and Minnewaska State Park. It is better for outdoor days than a purely walkable town weekend.
Hudson and the Catskills
Hudson is strongest for a design-and-food weekend; Woodstock, Phoenicia and Tannersville work better as a 2–3 night mountain trip.
